He is a National Geographic Explorer, a Fellow International of The Explorers Club, a Vital Impacts Fellow, and an Associate Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers.
With a background in marine science, Shin began his career researching sharks in Thailand’s commercial fisheries before transitioning into photojournalism. His work often combines scientific research with long-form documentary photography, exploring issues ranging from shark and ray conservation and fisheries to coastal communities and traditional fishing cultures across Asia.
Shin has worked on assignments for National Geographic, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, while also providing editorial and news coverage through Getty Images. Beyond environmental stories, his news coverage includes conflict, politics, crime, and natural disasters, with his work appearing widely in international media. He has also worked with conservation organizations, including the Save Our Seas Foundation, WWF, IUCN, and Ocean Conservancy. His work has received recognition from Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Ocean Photographer of the Year, and Pictures of the Year International.
Although his focus is now on photojournalism, Shin remains active within the scientific community. He is a co-founder of Thai Sharks and Rays, an independent research collective, and continues to collaborate on shark and ray research across Southeast Asia, which he calls home. He is a member of the IUCN SSC Shark Specialist Group and serves as a technical advisor to Thailand’s Department of Marine and Coastal Resources.
Shin regularly works with conservation organizations, including IUCN, Save Our Seas Foundation, WildAid, Ocean Conservancy, and others, and also photographs news for Getty Images as a stringer. His images have been published by National Geographic, the Washington Post, the New York Times, TIME, and the Guardian, amongst others. His photographs were awarded in multiple prestigious international competitions, including Wildlife Photographers of the Year, Ocean Photographers of the Year, and Pictures of the Year International.
Shin is a National Geographic Explorer, a Fellow International of the Explorer’s Club, an Associated Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers, a Vital Impacts Fellow, one of the World Press Photo 6×6 Global Talents, an Xposure Global Focus Talent, listed among the PDN’s 30s, and the Explorer’s Club EC50. He gave TEDx talks on marine conservation photography in Bangkok in 2017 and in Hong Kong in 2021.
Although his focus is now on conservation photojournalism, he is still active within the scientific community. Shin is a co-founder of Thai Sharks and Rays, an independent research collective, and he regularly collaborates on sharks and rays research in the Southeast Asia region, which he calls home. He serves as a technical advisor for the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources of Thailand.
