Oceans Initiative: Science Meets Storytelling

100 For the Ocean [2024-2025] Recipient: Oceans Initiative

The misty, rugged coastline of the Pacific Northwest is home to the Southern Resident Killer Whales—one of the most endangered orca populations on the planet. With only 75 individuals remaining, every single whale is known by name, and their survival hangs in a delicate balance. Oceans Initiative, a 2024/2025 recipient of the 100 for the Ocean initiative, is a research group dedicated to identifying and mitigating the threats facing these iconic marine mammals.

By bridging the gap between scientific research and government policy, they are providing the evidence-based solutions needed to protect the Salish Sea and ensure a future for the whales that call it home.

What sets Oceans Initiative apart is their commitment to “strategic science”—focused research designed to influence policy quickly and effectively. From proving how slowing down ships can double an orca’s ability to find food, to developing mathematical models for salmon recovery, their work turns data into immediate conservation action.

In collaboration with 100 for the Ocean, we are proud to share a new short film that highlights the scientists on the front lines and the resilient spirit of the Southern Residents. Watch the film to see how science is giving our oceans a fighting chance.
