Young Ocean Explorers – Inspiring the Next Generation of Ocean Protectors

100 for the Ocean 2024-2025 Recipient: Young Ocean Explorers

By SeaLegacy & 100 for the Ocean

When we’re young, the things we learn to love often stay with us for life.

A child who discovers the beauty of the sea, who understands that a thriving ocean means healthy communities and a vibrant planet, carries that knowledge into adulthood. Those children grow into the scientists, voters, and policymakers who will determine the future of our blue planet. From New Zealand, Young Ocean Explorers — one of three 2024/2025 recipients of the 100 for the Ocean initiative — are showing just how powerful this truth can be.

From School Project to National Movement

When she was just 12 years old, Riley Hathaway asked her dad, Steve, a professional underwater cameraman, for help with a school project. Together, they filmed a short video about the wonders of the ocean. Riley’s classmates loved it and something bigger was born.

In 2012, that school project transformed into Young Ocean Explorers, a grassroots initiative reaching tens of thousands of students with films, live presentations, and digital resources. Through stories of marine life and conservation, Riley and Steve inspire kids to cut plastic waste, care for their local communities, and take action for the ocean.

Tackling Big Challenges

Young Ocean Explorers doesn’t shy away from tough issues either. For example, while New Zealand often claims that 30% of its waters are “protected,” less than 1% is fully protected and truly safeguarded. By teaching kids to question these realities and dream of stronger protections, the program is building a new generation ready to stand up for the ocean. Today, in collaboration with 100 for the Ocean, we are proud to share a new short film that celebrates the ripple effect of one idea carried forward with passion.
