Bristol Bay, Alaska, is one of the last truly wild places on Earth. Home to the world’s largest wild salmon fishery and thriving Kodiak brown bears, this expedition captured the region’s extraordinary beauty while highlighting the ongoing fight to stop Pebble Mine and protect its ecosystem, culture, and sustainable livelihoods for generations.
At the mention of Antarctica, the picture that comes to mind is one of blizzard swept penguin colonies and frozen ice cliffs. The truth is Antarctica is a complex and diverse ecosystem that harbors a surprising density of wildlife and rivals even he richest habitats in the world.
Guided by our passion for marine conservation and driven by the urgency of the climate crisis, we witness the stark reality of coral bleaching, a poignant reminder of the challenges facing the Great Barrier Reef. Yet, amidst the adversity, we find hope in the resilience of nature and the tireless efforts of local communities and scientists working to protect this precious ecosystem.
In August of 2024, SeaLegacy team was invited for the chance of a lifetime to photograph endangered southern right whales off the coast of Australia. Our friend and award-winning photographer Scott Portelli had just cleared the final hurdle in securing permits to film within the Great Australian Bight and wanted to share the experience with us and help tell the story to the world. Our initial thrill quickly turned serious, however, when he explained why he was determined to film the whales.
The two seas surrounding Baja California Sur are teeming with the symphony of life and are home to over one third of the world’s cetaceans. This is part of the reason why this marine ecosystem is such a unique and critical stronghold of ocean life.
The campaign helped to end the use of brutal driftnets that have a 7:1 bycatch ratio, threatening sharks, whales, dolphins, turtles, sea lions, fish, and so many more. In 2018, inspired by our friend and conservation hero, the late Rob Stewart, we joined the fight alongside Sharkwater Foundation, Mercy for Animals, Turtle Island Restoration Network, and Sea Change Agency. Four years later in 2022, the US passed the Federal Drift Gillnet Legistration, effectively banning at the federal level the use of driftnets across the nation.
There is irrefutable evidence that open-net fish farming destroys wild fish stocks and pollutes coastal marine environments, impacting the entire food chain. The campaign supported to evict open-net Atlantic salmon farming operations in Broughton Archipelago. The initiative was led by the indigenous Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw First Nations peoples, whose traditional territories were being utilized illegally.
Cuba’s Gardens of the Queen, Jardines De La Reina, is often called the crown jewel of the Caribbean. It also serves as Cuba’s first marine park and the largest no-take marine reserve in the Caribbean. This is one of the healthiest and most vibrant marine ecosystems in the world. Strictly protected since 1996, our expedition documented how the Gardens show us what’s possible when we commit to creating healthy and abundant ocean.
The expedition focused on documenting a special pod of sperm whales, as they slept vertically in the water column, dove for up to a mile to feast on squid (deeper than a submarine could ever hope to reach), and used echolocation to create intricate maps of their vast underwater territories. One playful whale named “Ariel” from The Little Mermaid took a keen interest in joining our co-founders on their filming expedition.
SeaLegacy dives into the Caribbean Sea to document the Dominican Republic’s vital conservation initiative to establish two new marine protected areas.

This region’s achievements act as a guiding light of hope for conservation worldwide.
SeaLegacy 1 returns to its homestead in Aotearoa (New Zealand) to document its natural beauty and the impact marine reserves have on the nation’s biodiversity when the community comes together to protect it.
The Lofoten Islands sit at the ecological and cultural heart of northern Norway. These waters support the world’s largest cod and herring stocks, dense aggregations of sperm whales and killer whales, some of Europe’s largest seabird colonies including puffins and cormorants, and the largest known cold-water coral reef on Earth.
Panama substantially expanded the limits of the Banco Volcán Area of Managed Resources (Banco Volcán AMR) to further protect and steward important marine ecosystems, endangered flora and fauna, and important fishing resources found within Panama’s territorial waters in the Caribbean Sea. The expansion increases the size of the Banco Volcán AMR from approximately 14,200 sq km to over 90,000 sq km, with at least half of the total zone designated as a fully protected marine area where no extractive or environmentally damaging activities will be allowed.
Our co-founders and the SeaLegacy 1 explore Panama’s Guna Yala Comarca, where they became immersed in the community’s culture and wisdom. Together with the Guna Yala, they reflected on how valuing their people’s traditions and customers could help solve some of the challenges that the community is currently facing.
The RAVE (rapid assessment visual expedition), alongside Mission Blue and Deep Blue Patagonia, created story assets that highlight the fragility of this unique ecosystem. The primary focus was to inspire urgent action from global communities and the Chilean government to safeguard and protect this invaluable natural wonder.

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands have what could be the single largest concentration of marine species in the world. By protecting the region with a South Atlantic Marine Wildlife Sanctuary, we will not only safeguard a wild, productive ecosystem, but we support our entire planet’s ability to regulate itself.
Tiger sharks led Dr. Austin Gallagher, founder of Beneath the Waves, to the historic discovery of the world’s largest seagrass bed in The Bahamas.
The expedition, in partnership with Timor-Leste Maritime Boundary Office and Conservation International, focused on showcasing the importance of securing a maritime border within Indonesia, home to the most biodiverse coral reef left on Earth.
